Cutout

A form of stop-motion animation using flat characters, props and backgrounds cut out from various materials. Each frame of film is formed by moving these around on a flat surface (or on multiple flat surfaces on several layers), rather than by drawing an entirely new image. The earliest Soviet animated films from the 1920s used this technique, it lost popularity in the 1930s with the advent of cel animation, and again began to be used from the early 1960s onwards.
