Paint

Animation using paint. There are several different types: 1) paint-on-glass - each frame is created by manipulating wet paint (typically oil) on a flat, backlit (or frontlit) surface. Used by Oscar-winning animator Aleksandr Petrov. 2) paint-on-cell - painted by hand on celluloids, solid paint (films by Vladimir Samsonov), or watercolor ('The Sky-Blue Puppy'). 3) Paint-on-canvas. Likely first used by Oskar Fischinger in his 1947 abstract animated film 'Motion Painting I'.
