Description:
Two stories: In "The Duck and the Pipe" (directed by Orlova), a sad baby duck cheers up after being given a musical toy, but makes everyone else miserable (for young children). In "About a Birdie" (directed by Bardin), cats attempt to have a family portrait taken.
Yekaterina Karganova's poem "The Duck and the Pipe" can be read here (in Russian, illustrated by Vladimir Suteyev). Ovsey Driz's poem "About a Birdie" can be read here (also in Russian).
Regarding the origin of the phrase "watch the birdie!" among photographers (in Russian and English), please see the description here.
The animator.ru profile for this film neglects to credit Bardin as director and gets Orlova's first name wrong.

A pleasant pair of two short films based on children's poems. The second is yet another little-known early entry in Bardin's filmography, being translated for the first time. The first film, though based on a poem, is wordless... while the second is narrated by its director (why not? Bardin was an actor before he started directing at Soyuzmultfilm, so he could do double duty). The art direction in both films looks pretty nice, though especially in the second one - quite a contrast to Bardin's preferences once he moved into stop motion animation! In the first film, the little instrument that the baby duck is given looks like a bugle or trumpet but sounds like a badly-played slide whistle. I don't really know what it's supposed to be and so I really wasn't sure that "pipe" was the right word for the translation. This was Olga Orlova's second film and (apparently) the last she would direct until 1994.
