Drawn (cel)

2D animation drawn by hand on sheets of transparent plastic called cels (celluloids). It appeared in the Soviet Union in the late 1930s, replacing the previously-dominant technique of drawing on paper and cutting out the characters. It was a faster technique, but limited the possible drawing tools that could be used, and thus limited the illustration style. From the late 1950s onwards, other animation techniques increasingly began to be used, and it became obsolete in the 2000s with the advent of digital animation.
