Description:

A little duck gets her wing injured by a fox and is unable to fly south for the winter. Based on the story by Dmitriy Mamin-Sibiryak (1891).

One of the most beloved cartoons of its time in the USSR, and winner of a number of international awards:
1949 - IV International Film Festival in Marianske Lazne (ChSRR), Award for the best animated film for children
1949 - II International Film Festival of workers in the cities of Czechoslovakia, Award for the best children's film
1952 - Bombay IFF - Marble Vase Prize

An English dub was made some time in the early 1950s, and it was released on 16mm film, apparently by "Official Films" (perhaps 1951, or else 1955). This version can be viewed and downloaded on Archive.org, but the image quality is very bad, and the company is listed as "Macmillan Films" (perhaps that was the TV company).

There are some differences from the book. In the original story, Little Gray Neck hurts her wing long before the birds need to fly away, rather than on the same day, and the entire flock knows that she will have to overwinter and gives her advice. Also, in the story she survives by meeting a human and staying with him through the winter.

The above video has a well-restored image, but the sound is kind of scratchy.
