Description:
A Mother Hen asks to borrow some salt from her neighbour, Ms. Goose, who wants a favour in return. A simple request triggers a whole cascade of requests that must be arranged...
The cartoon satirizes the rampant bartering present in the Soviet society of the late "stagnation" era.
The art director of the film was the legendary Eduard Kyrych, also responsible for the "Cossacks" series. The award-winning animation director Igor Kovalyov worked as animator on this film, and its "scratchy" art style and main character likely influenced his later directorial debut, "His Wife, the Hen".
A copy of the cartoon is stored in the Ukrainian State Film Archive. The Ukrainian version was scanned and restored by the Film Laboratory of the Dovzhenko Center in 2023.
The films of this studio at the time tended to be officially released in two languages (Ukrainian and Russian). The first video above is the Ukrainian version, and the second is the Russian (unfortunately, missing its opening title and end credits).
