A prince who is very ugly but very smart falls in love with a princess who is very beautiful but very stupid. Based on a tale by Charles Perrault.
The full story can be read here. The approach to the fairy tale is free, abstract, philosophical and with a modern classical musical score that was not unusual in the Soviet Union of this time period. You might want to watch it twice and/or read the original fairy tale for a better appreciation.
"After making the highly appraised "Swans" (Лебеди) in 1983, in my idea her best animation in a streak of quite great and original animations («THUMBTACKS AND LITTLE MEN» (1980), «WHY ELEPHANTS?» (1980), «THE CATS HOUSE» (1982), «THE SWANS» (1983)), Ricky the Tuft is probably her most pretentious animation, but less successful than the ones before."
