This film is part of the Umka series.
Description:
The little polar bear, Umka, hitches a ride on a helicopter to look for the little boy who is his friend. Part 3/3.
The first two films in this "trilogy" were made in 1969 and 1970, by directors Vladimir Pekar and Vladimir Popov. The story at the time was unfinished, and was only finished by the original writer Yuriy Yakovlev in 1977, in issue 12 of the "Murzilka" magazine. By that time, the directors were no longer directing together and had moved on to other projects - Pekar was working on his series adapting folklore and myths of exotic cultures, while Popov was working on the hit "Prostokvashino" series.
In 2019, Soyuzmultfilm announced a reboot of a number of old, popular "artistic properties". As part of this, they decided to complete the "unfinished Umka trilogy" by adapting the 1977 story. The film premiered in Dec 2019. Reviews were mixed - some liked the attempted faithfulness to the original visual style and characters, while others said that the soul of the original films was no longer quite there. However, it was more positively received than the studio's other attempted reboots of the time.
The studio then began working on a 104-episode "Umka" TV series, which premiered in 2022.

I can see that a genuine effort was made, but this is still my least favourite of the three films (I think the first is still the best, and each subsequent one took away some of what made it so memorable).
