Description:

In a small fishing hamlet, a retired sailor Longren and his daughter lived as a hermit. Having been widowed, he raised little Assol alone. Since childhood, she has been waiting for a man who will come for her on a ship with scarlet sails. The whole hamlet laughed at Assol, but one day the day came when her dream came true.

An adaptation of the well-known Russian romantic novel "Scarlet Sails" (1923). Mostly live-action, but with significant animation in some places. A bit similar to the films of Karel Zeman.

This was the final film of Boris Stepantsev. He had been developing the project since 1974. The filming of the film itself was preceded by the creation of an experimental video for presentation to the State Film Agency in order to confirm the feasibility of the proposed creative and production solution. Initially, filming was supposed to be carried out at the Gorky Film Studio, but there was no necessary rear-projection equipment, and the director was sent with the project to Mosfilm, where in 1978 he conducted test filming of key scenes of the future film. Despite the fact that their results proved the advantage of the new technology, the project did not receive support and was redirected to the Ekran Creative Association, where Stepantsev finally implemented his plan. The film premiered on central television on January 1, 1983. Stepantsev died on May 25 of the same year.
