Biography:

Born in Minsk, Belarus on Aug 30, 1920.

People's Artist of the Russian Federation (2002). In 1941, he graduated from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and in 1951 from the art department of VGIK. From 1948-2001 he worked at the Soyuzmultfilm film studio, first as an assistant artist, then from 1951 as art director (until 1963 in collaboration with A.V. Vinokurov). He worked both in cel and puppet animation, mainly with directors Lev Atamanov, Roman Kachanov, Ivan Ufimtsev and Ivan Aksenchuk. His most famous contribution was perhaps designing the characters "Cheburashka" and "Shapoklyak" in 1971. In 1975 he tried his hand at directing for the first time, and began directing films consistently from 1982 on, becoming most well-known for the "Little Monkeys" series. He directed his final film in 1997 at the age of 77.

He was a member of the artistic council of Soyuzmultfilm. From 1996-99, he was a member of the board of the AP "Film Studio Soyuzmultfilm", in 1998 a founder of the RPO "Association Soyuzmultfilm", and member of its Board. From 2000-01 he worked at the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Film Studio Soyuzmultfilm".

A participant of many exhibitions, including personal, and an illustrator of children's books. Winner of the American award "Hollywood for Children" and the prize "For Contribution to the Profession" at the XI Open Russian Festival for Animated Films in Suzdal (2006). Laureate of the Presidential Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of literature and art for works for children and youth (2016). Member of the Nika Academy of Cinematographic Arts. Member of ASIFA. He starred in the documentary series "The World of Animation or Animation of the World" (2001), "Soyuzmultfilm – Fairy Tales and True Tales" (episodes "Old Walls", 2003; "The Artist – Profession and Fate", 2003), "Dolls in the World of People" (episode "Script for Pinocchio", 2005), "Factory of Miracles" (episode "The Art Director", 2006) and "Weightless Life" (2006).

A book dedicated to his art titled "Leonid Shvartsman. Master of the Image" (Леонид Шварцман. Мастер образа) was published in 2021. It can be read here (on video).

Leonid Shvartsman died in 2022 at the age of 101.
