Children build a snowman to deliver a letter to Grandpa Frost asking for a fir-tree. At midnight, he comes to life and, with a yard puppy, goes to deliver the letter. Based on the folk tale by Vladimir Suteyev, 'Yolka' ('Fir-tree').

Two English versions of this film were released in the US: 'Spunky the Snowman' and 'The Snow Postman'.
