Biography:

Date of birth: 26 July 1938.

Studied at the T.G. Shevchenko Children's Art School in Kiev (1952-1957) and at VGIK (Film-university) (1959-1965). Worked at Soyuzmultfilm (1965-1975), Ekran/Multtelefilm (1975-1995). Taught at the Institute of Radio and Television, the Art Lyceum of Animation Art No. 333 (1996-2001), and conducted courses for graphic artists at Soyuzmultfilm. In 1997, worked as a director of the Multparad TV program. Member of ASIFA.

"What are our cartoons? This is the creation of characters. Disney paid a lot of money to create Bambi, Snow White, 101 Dalmatians, for Mowgli. Our people gave Cheburashka, Gena the crocodile, 38 parrots for free. This was done by one artist - Leonid Shvartsman. He did not create stereotypes. He created characters."

"When I am asked what will happen in animation 50 years from now, what films will be like, I answer: what has been created since the Disney film 101 Dalmatians was born? Nothing better has been done. And after a while this film will look like a miracle, we will not understand how it was done. Because the school of classical animation, as we call it, is disappearing."
